Ceruloplasmin Blood Test

CERULOPLASMIN BLOOD TEST

This blood test measures the level of ceruloplasmin, a protein produced by the liver that binds to copper and transports it in the blood. This test is primarily used to diagnose and monitor Wilson's disease, a genetic disorder that causes excessive accumulation of copper in the body, leading to liver and neurological damage.

Additionally, ceruloplasmin levels can be indicative of other conditions such as Menkes disease, chronic liver disease, and certain types of anemia. Elevated levels might be seen in inflammatory conditions or pregnancy, while decreased levels are commonly associated with Wilson's disease.

Your doctor will normally request this test together with other tests, such as a full blood count and serum copper, for example, to get a full assessment of copper metabolism.
